Description
The Implant, also known as Nexplanon, is small about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. Local anesthetic is placed to help control the pain with the insertion.
The implant slowly releases progestin for up to five years, this prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus. For some people it can also stop eggs from being released from the ovaries (called ovulation).
Efficacy
It is one of the most effective birth control methods. It is 99% effective in protection from pregnancy.
Benefits
You do not have to remember anything once it is inserted.
Remember – It does not protect against STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Please refer to this to see ways to protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Side Effects
The most common side effect is irregular bleeding. Most people over time will have fewer and lighter periods.
This method does not affect future fertility (pregnancy potential) once it is removed. The only method that affects your ability to get pregnant is sterilization. Typically when the implant is removed you will resume your periods within the next few months, if you do not want to become pregnant then you will need another method to protect against pregnancy.
